Frequently asked questions

What does add page numbers to PDF do?

This tool stamps every page of a PDF with a footer such as Page 3 of 12, so anyone reading it can refer to a specific page without ambiguity. Lawyers add page numbers to bundles of exhibits before a hearing, so a judge or opposing counsel can be pointed to page 47 directly. Teachers number worksheet packets so students can find the right page during class. Authors and students number thesis drafts and reports before printing them for review. It is especially useful when the source document, such as a scanned form or an exported slide deck, has no numbering built in, since finding and discussing a specific page in a long PDF is otherwise slow and error-prone.

Who needs page numbers on a PDF?

Teachers sharing worksheets, teams reviewing contracts, students submitting reports, and anyone printing or sharing long PDFs where people need to cite page numbers aloud.

What format are the numbers?

Each page shows Page X of Y in the footer, where X is the current page and Y is the total page count. You pick bottom center, bottom left, or bottom right before processing.

Does this replace existing page numbers?

The tool adds a new footer on every page. If the PDF already has page numbers in the body, you may see both. Use a clean export from your source app when possible.

Is processing private?

Yes. Your PDF never leaves your device. Numbering runs locally in your browser and downloads like any other file.

What are the limits?

One PDF up to 25 MB and 200 pages, same as our other PDF tools.

Why does my password-protected PDF fail?

Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first. Use our Remove PDF Password tool if you know the password, then return here to add numbers.
