Compare against these cities

An average (mean) adds the listed city totals and divides by how many cities. That is the country figure here. A median is the middle value if you lined households up from low to high. High spenders pull the average up, so a typical household often sits below the average. City baselines here are official average spending, not medians.

Method and sources

Estimate only: Results are average spending based on official statistics, not median. They use published rents and household expenditure tables, but they will not match every household exactly.

Method: Housing from official capital-city rent baselines. Non-housing from ABS capital-city household expenditure groups (Table 5), CPI-bridged to 2025-Q1, refreshed with ABS Monthly Household Spending Indicator category growth to May 2026, and profile-scaled from published HES household-type totals.

Agencies do not publish a full city × household × category cube for every line. Where needed, Justools joins official tables (CPI bridges, regional indexes, Mietspiegel or rent observatory joins, or peer-metro price parities). Non-housing is average spending from those tables, not median. Housing uses each country's published mass-market, new-tenancy, asking, or occupied-stock series, which can sit below or above other lease types. That is published-table arithmetic, not invented prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is this Cost of Living Calculator?▾

It estimates monthly household spend for Australian capital cities, major New Zealand cities, major UK cities, 65 US metros covering all 50 states, major Canadian cities, Singapore, major Taiwan cities, major South Korea cities, major Japan cities, and major cities in Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Poland. You pick a country, a city, and a household type, then type your own housing, food, transport, and other amounts. Compare against these cities shows official average spending for that household in the selected country, plus the selected city's baseline and rank. Your cost fields start empty. The city average is a comparison figure, not a prefilled budget. Comparisons stay within the selected country and currency.

Where does the expense data come from?▾

Baselines use official statistical and housing sources: ABS and state rent or transport data for Australia; Stats NZ, IRD expenditure tables, and Tenancy Services rents for New Zealand; ONS Family Spending and private rents for the UK; BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey, HUD Fair Market Rents, and BEA regional price parities where needed for the US; CMHC rents and StatCan Survey of Household Spending for Canada; HDB mass-market rents and SingStat HES for Singapore; MOI rent-subsidy lease medians and DGBAS FIES for Taiwan; Korea Real Estate Board wolse and Statistics Korea HIES for South Korea; Housing and Land Survey occupied-stock rents and FIES for Japan; RTB/ESRI new-tenancy rents and CSO HBS for Ireland; Pararius private asking rents and CBS spending for the Netherlands; SCB hyresrätt rents and household spending for Sweden; SSB rents and spending for Norway; Statistik Austria for Austria; Destatis / Mietspiegel joins for Germany; INSEE / Observatoire des loyers for France; BFS for Switzerland; OMI and ISTAT for Italy; INE / MITMA for Spain; GUS / NBP for Poland. Netherlands housing is private asking, not full social stock. Ireland uses new-tenancy averages. Several Europe markets use bedroom scales and national non-housing, so within-country gaps are mainly housing-led. The results panel lists the source owners for the city you selected.

How does the methodology work?▾

Justools publishes city-level monthly baselines for Single, Couple, and Family across eight categories, separately per country. Housing comes from official rent tables, FMR, rent indexes, Mietspiegel, or documented private asking joins where agencies do not publish absolute city levels. Non-housing comes from household expenditure surveys at national, regional, capital-city, or metro level. Agencies do not publish a full city × household × category cube for every line, so where needed Justools joins official tables with documented bridges such as CPI index ratios, regional total-spend indexes, peer-metro price parities, or bedroom size scales. For many Asia and Europe countries, non-housing is still largely national, so within-country city gaps are mainly housing-led. That is table arithmetic from published sources, not invented grocery prices. Comparisons and ranks stay within the selected country and currency.

How often is the underlying data updated?▾

Reference datasets are reviewed on a regular schedule aligned with major economic releases. The results panel shows a Data as of label for the live snapshot.

Can I save or share my cost scenario?▾

The calculator remembers your last country, city, and household in this browser. Copy the page URL to share that setup. Amounts you type stay on this device only. Justools does not offer accounts or cloud saving.

How accurate are the results?▾

Results are indicative baselines for comparing cities within the same country. They are not a prediction of your exact bank balance. Non-housing lines are average spending from official statistics, not median, so a typical household may sit lower, especially on leisure. Local prices, lifestyle, and household choices will differ. Housing series are mass-market, new-tenancy, occupied-stock, or private asking where that is what agencies or documented joins publish. Private condo, open-market asking, social housing, or new-lease rents can differ, especially in Singapore, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Paris. Korea baselines are monthly wolse cashflow and do not model jeonse deposit capital. Adjust the housing line if your lease type differs.

How does Salary Swap work?▾

Salary Swap estimates the take-home pay needed for this lifestyle basket if you moved to another city. It multiplies your current take-home pay by the ratio of destination cost to origin cost, using official city baselines for your household profile, or your entered cost scaled by those baselines. Same-country mode stays in one currency. Cross-country mode keeps costs in local currencies for the basket math, and uses an editable exchange rate for display and reverse conversion.

Can I compare salaries across countries?▾

Yes. Choose Cross-country in Salary Swap, pick from and to countries and cities, and review or edit the exchange rate (defaults refresh with the monthly FX snapshot). The headline is needed take-home pay for this basket, using lifestyle-basket purchasing power, not bank FX alone.
